Author Rights, Copyright, Publishing Models, and Open Access
Date: Friday, August 15, 2008
Time: 8:00 a.m. – 4:10 p.m.
Place: Rice-Eccles Stadium and Tower (6th floor) at the University of Utah
Parking: available immediately west of the stadium (map)
The Rice-Eccles Stadium parking lot has been “reserved” for Friday, August 15. Park in the southeast portion of the lot; use the C entry; take the elevator to the 6th floor. There will be UALC Retreat signs in the lot and at the C entry.
Purpose: In response to the UALC Needs Assessment done earlier this year, the UALC Professional Development Committee is hosting an all day retreat. Please join your colleagues from the Utah Academic Library Consortium for this one-day professional development retreat. This year’s focus is on scholarly communication–specifically “Author Rights, Copyright, Publishing Models, and Open Access.” Keynote speakers Heather Joseph (Executive Director, SPARC) and Joan Giesecke (Dean of Libraries, University of Nebraska-Lincoln) will provide the broad perspective on these issues; panelists (librarians and teaching faculty from several UALC institutions) will provide a more localized perspective. Attendees will provide the thoughtful questions, lively discussions, and collegial networking opportunities. This is a great opportunity to hear about the latest developments in the field, what’s going on in member institutions, and what faculty need from academic libraries.

Heather Joseph, Executive Director SPARC Title: The Power of Open: Enabling Research, Empowering Researchers Abstract: In today's digital environment, scholars have more options than ever available to them to ensure that the results of their research can be shared and used by the widest possible audience - helping to advance their field of study, as well as raise the visibility of their work. Scholars can determine the ultimate reach and utility that their published research can achieve through conscience consideration of what journal to publish in, what kind of publishing agreement to sign (or not to sign), what rights they want to reserve, and what rights they are comfortable with assigning to a third party. Small actions can make a big difference creating and enabling a fully realized digital research environment. This talk will focus on helping researchers and faculty members identify and evaluate what options are available and most appropriate for them. |
